The Story

Barón de Chirel wine first appeared in 1986 as the result of experimental production using a selection of grapes from very old vines, between 80 and 110 years’ old, with a very low yield and high quality. From the results of these trials would appear what we could say was the precursor of the so-called “new era” of Rioja wines. This wine is produced on a very limited scale and only in the best vintage years, in which the character of the vineyard, the soil and the variety are expressed as part of a single, harmonious whole. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration period does not exceed 12 days. The malolactic fermentation takes place in small wooden vats with a capacity of 20,000 litres and the wine is then aged for 20 months in Bordeauxstyle barrels made of French oak. Finally, the wine spends a minimum time of a year rounding off in the bottle before being released for sale. - See more at: http://www.marquesderiscal.com/vinos_detalleeng.php?id=1#sthash.rn7KFc0c.dpuf

Written Notes

Baron de Chirel could well have been the first of the new-age Riojas, first made as a kind of experiment in 1986 from very old vines with 60% Tempranillo, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was bottled in the summer of 2012 with a pH of 3.54.
Modern Atlantic profile. Red berries, lots of black pepper and balsamic herbs in the nose. Somehow austere, very mineral, fresh and full of power. Elastic and fluid. Anyhow, the wood is still quite present and it will need some more time in the bottle. Very elegant, vigorous, classical Rioja. It will grow in the bottle. (LG)

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Elegant nose with restrained fruit, opening up quite slowly, blackcurrants and blackcurrant leaf, discreet smoky notes, smoked ham in the background. With some oxygen, vanilla, mild spices and hints of roasted aromas. On the palate well structured with firm tannins and discreet acidity, fine fruit, convincing length and a quite opulent finish. A wine which demands more time for evolution but has potential an depth.
