The Story

Typically, the Tiers Vineyard is hand harvested in the last week of March to the first week of April.

A normal analysis of Tiers Chardonnay grapes at harvest is:

Sugar: 23.5 Brix

Total Acid: 8gpl

pH: 3.1

The tiny bunches are selectively hand harvested into 0.3 tonne slotted trays and put into the cold room at the Tapanappa winery at the bottom of the vineyard. After 24 hours in the cold room the fruit at 2C is tipped as whole f...

Written Notes

Tiers Chardonnay 2023 ($110) – Tiers has long been one of Australia’s most famous Chardonnays. This latest release will only add to the reputation. First planted in 1979, fermentation was in French oak barriques, one third new. 575 dozen.

A dilute lemon hue, there are hints of nutmeg and cashews as the oak integration proceeds. Spices, lemon pith, florals, grapefruit and lemon curd, especially on the palate. There is a tiny tropical note edging in, with a flick of pineapple. An immaculate structure here with oystershell acidity, knife-edge balance and incredible length. Wow, this is a good Chardonnay. Enjoy it over the next ten to fifteen years. The score has the potential to go even higher in time. 97.

  • 97p

Carries notes of ripe pineapple, grapefruit, as well as hints of freesia flower.

With light to medium body and touches of green apple, it is a perfect accompaniment to cooked shellfish, rich seafood dishes with cream sauce, and salad with French dressing.
