Despite, in-spite, because of - who knows - this coming from a vintage that challenged, one that Brian Croser commented as: "uncharted territory for me even after 47 vintages”; this is exquisite Chardonnay. The Tiers has, rightly, established itself as one of (if not the) greatest Australian Chardonnay vineyard.

Delicate, and leading with a mix of fig and roasted nut character, and an oh-so delicate level of struck match character. A seasoning, rather than leading player.

The palate lends more of a creamy citrus, oak-kissed, with more a creamy hazelnut bent to it. Citrus cuts and thrusts through the length of the wine, for all its probing it just delivers a generous length of flavour. 93+

Another great Tapanappa Chardonnay. Sourced from a block of close-planted vines planted in 2003 on the Tiers property, this is quite a contrast to the more linear Tiers (which still has its measure). From the outset, this is more opulent and mouthfilling, the flavours sliding into nutty richness and peach, the finish toasty and full. It’s a model, traditional Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, with oak, lees and ripe fruit playing a part, delivering a wine of unashamed depth, complexity and real quality.

Full bodied Chardonnay that I want to drink.

Best drinking: Good now, and will hold for a good 5-8yrs easy. 18.5/20, 94/100. 13%, $55. Would I buy it? $55 might buy village level Burgundy. Or this. Yeah, I know where my dollars would go.

The vintage is so clear to see in this wine.  It is full of gardenia, soapstone, grilled pineapple, yellow peach, nutmeg and saffron.  The palate is magnificent.  All the richness and complexity that the site affords, but with a nimbleness and an edge that makes it so interesting.  Nervous tension again… overflowing with fresh pink pepper berries and a pebbly, schist-y finish. Yes.” 18.3pts and $55
