The Story

Taylor’s Port is the last of the original English founding port companies to remain family owned. It has never been bought, sold or taken over. The company is run by descendants of the founders. This ensures its outlook and philosophy remains focused on the production of top quality ports.
Taylor’s were also the first to invest heavily in property in the Upper Douro. The recent acquisition of Quinta do Junco illustrates the continued commitment of the firm to producing premium quality wines. Their Estates at Vargellas, Terra Feita and Junco, have been carefully selected and all have the prize Casa do Douro “A” classification. The main grape varieties used are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Amarela.
Each Estate has a carefully planned programme of new planting to maintain the standards of the estate wines - used for the famous Taylor’s Vintage Ports, single Quinta wines, and the backbone of Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage Port.

Taylor’s Vintage Port is made from grapes grown on the firms two properties Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. The stature of its Port is acknowledged by experts everywhere - and by the international wine auctions which regularly price Taylor’s Vintage Port ten to fifteen per cent above its rivals.

Wine Information

A wet 1999 harvest was followed by a cold and dry Winter with almost no rain. April and May were very wet, June and July very dry and the first half of August extremelyvery hot. Harvest started on 20th September. The resulting wines were big and full bodied with intense colour and very attractive aromas. The turn of the century was heralded by the production of exceptional Port wines, notably so in the Douro Valley.

Vintage 2000

The 2000 vintage in Portugal, particularly in the Douro Valley, which is known for its production of Port wines, is considered a very good to excellent vintage. This vintage is often highly regarded for both Port wines and table wines produced in various regions of Portugal. Here are some key characteristics of the Portugal wine vintage 2000:

  1. Quality: The 2000 vintage is generally regarded as producing high-quality wines. Both Port and table wines from this vintage are often well-balanced and have good structure.

  2. Port Wines: In the Douro Valley, where Port wines are produced, the vintage 2000 is considered outstanding. The conditions during the growing season were favorable, resulting in grapes with excellent ripeness and concentration.

  3. Aging Potential: Wines from the 2000 vintage in Portugal, particularly top-quality Ports and red table wines, are known for their aging potential. They can continue to develop and improve with extended cellaring.

  4. Varietal Characteristics: The vintage expressed the characteristics of traditional Portuguese grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, with rich fruit flavors and complexity.

  5. Longevity: Many of the wines from the 2000 vintage are still drinking well today and are considered excellent choices for those seeking mature Portuguese wines.

It's important to note that the quality and characteristics of wines can vary depending on the specific region, producer, and grape varieties used. While 2000 was generally a successful vintage in Portugal, individual wine selections and labels may have their unique qualities and aging potential. As always, for specific wines or producers, it's advisable to consult wine experts, reviews, and recommendations to make informed choices.

Written Notes

Bright deep ruby. Brooding, complex aromas of cassis, minerals, graphite, licorice and damp earth; distinct hints of surmaturite. Dense, chewy and powerful, with a saline impression of extract. At once strong and seamless, with penetrating, youthfully primary black fruit flavors that really expand and reverberate in the mouth and on the very long, gripping finish. Exhilarating late note of dark chocolate. By no means a painfully backward Taylor, but structured to evolve for at least 25 to 30 years.

Difficult to taste Taylor blind now that the bottle has the bulbous neck. Very dark purple crimson. Complex nose. I can't even remember whether Taylor is meant to smell of violets but this one certainly does – that heady floral but refreshing mix. Rather gentlemen's-club-like with its note of leather and very dry, tannic finish. Extremely refreshing and confident as opposed to the round, modern 'robotic lagares' examples I've picked out which are presumably Symington wines. Bravo but it will need a lot of time.

First year they included fruit from 3rd property, Quinta do Junco (10%), in addition to Vargellas and Terra Feita. Very deeply coloured, though the colour is a little less vibrant than the Graham’s. More expressive on the nose. Peppery dark berries, pepper and violets. Highly aromatic – Christmas spices, cinammon, sweetness of oak. Darker and so fine on the palate though there is plenty of tannin and structure. Elegant even in youth. Streamlined and showing amazing finesse. Elegance incarnate.
