The Story

Taylor’s Port is the last of the original English founding port companies to remain family owned. It has never been bought, sold or taken over. The company is run by descendants of the founders. This ensures its outlook and philosophy remains focused on the production of top quality ports.
Taylor’s were also the first to invest heavily in property in the Upper Douro. The recent acquisition of Quinta do Junco illustrates the continued commitment of the firm to producing premium quality wines. Their Estates at Vargellas, Terra Feita and Junco, have been carefully selected and all have the prize Casa do Douro “A” classification. The main grape varieties used are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Amarela.
Each Estate has a carefully planned programme of new planting to maintain the standards of the estate wines - used for the famous Taylor’s Vintage Ports, single Quinta wines, and the backbone of Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage Port.


Taylor’s Vintage Port is made from grapes grown on the firms two properties Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. The stature of its Port is acknowledged by experts everywhere - and by the international wine auctions which regularly price Taylor’s Vintage Port ten to fifteen per cent above its rivals.

Wine Information

1927 Vintage: A classic vintage Port, one of the finest of the century, but because it coincided with the Great Depression, it didn’t sell well. Part of the stock was blended into standard quality Ports. ‘Good colour of ruby/brick red. Aromas of dried dark fruit, sultanas and raisin with just a hint of dried flowers. Full-bodied, very rich and raisiny on the palate, with dark chocolate and candied toffee, very sweet finish. Lively and gorgeous.’

One last flight of dessert wines? I think I can, I think I can. My notes were brief, apologies. A 1927 Broilo Vin Santo was white porty with a touch of morning mouth but uniquely excellent (93). A 1901 Bruder Gottdiener Ausbruch Imperial Tokaji had superb toffee flavors, ‘so good,’ I wrote. It had a thick and viscous texture (96). A 1927 Taylor’s Vintage Port was classic but not thrilling (94), and a 1936 Massandra Liveria Port was more similar to the Tokaji than the Taylor’s, despite sharing ‘Port’ in its name (94).

The 1927 Taylor's Vintage Port has a similar appearance to the 1924, yet the aromatics develop greater intensity with notes of sandalwood, ginger, cigar box, a hint of Clementine and a nutty tincture that becomes more pronounced, the longer it remains in the glass. The palate is full-bodied with more tannic structure than the 1924. It is exquisitely defined with notes of Manuka honey, liquorice, orange peel, fig and raisin. It shares the beguiling and sensual nature of the 1924 and it is slightly unctuous towards the finish. Endowed with immense length, this Taylor's Port lives up to its lofty reputation.
