The Story

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Riesling was first made in 1962 and has gained a reputation as one of Australia’s most consistent, value-for-money white wines. From a region famed for its red wines, this Riesling proves thatCoonawarra can also produce whites of the highest quality. Wynns Coonawarra Estate Riesling tends to show characters at the riper end of the spectrum, with circus aromas and an attractive fruit softness that is suited for the enjoyment on release. The 2013 is a superbly aromatic example of a cool climate Riesling with a good concentration of floral flavours and a gentle but lively palate. Another classic Riesling from Wynns, and as always, an enjoyable summer drink.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

Every time this wine is released, it is an opportunity to remind readers that it is not that long ago that riesling was the most widely planted variety in the region. Bizarre, given how Coonawarra is so inextricably linked, not just with reds, but cabernet. 2012 is the 50th vintage of this wine. For me, it is always a serviceable riesling rather than a stellar one. It is crisp, just a little minerally. Hints of pears. Broader than many. Mid length. A little juicy. Will take a few years in the cellar but not for extreme long term ageing.
