This wine has a dark red colour. The bouquet features ripe fruit aromas. Swirling unveils the light complexity of this sun-bathed vintage. Balanced and discrete woody hints supplement the aromatic palette. It starts off being very generous and full bodied, two characteristics of this vintage. Rich round tannins enhance the middle palate and finish.
Definitely this 2015 Saint-Emilion is a great third wine!

The Story

This wine is taking its natural place within the Domaine Clarence Dillon family, as an equal alongside the red and white wines of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, thereby becoming the 5th child in this illustrious family.

This wine will take its natural place as an equal alongside the red and white wines of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, thereby becoming the 5th child in this illustrious family.

The Gallo-Romans, creators of the vineyards of Saint-Emilion, had the habit of naming their 5th child Quintus (fifth). Therefore, Domaine Clarence Dillon has decided to pay homage to its glorious predecessors by re-baptising this growth Château Quintus.
5 (V) a number that characterises this estate with its slopes and parcels of vines reaching towards the four cardinal directions, and reclining before the very sky to which the farmers glance on a daily basis to glean what the heavens have in store.
The ancient Tour de Guet and even further back, in the Celtic period, an oppidum (a defended hill fort) on the plateau overlooking Saint Emilion, almost certainly at this same site were the inspiration for the estate’s second wine, Le Dragon de Quintus – a mythical creature that stands as guardian and protector of its treasure, a spectacular terroir.
A new bottle shape specially-designed for Quintus was also introduced, modelled on those used by Château Haut-Brion in the mid-19th century and recently unearthed in a pirates’ lair on the island of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean. Like their predecessors, these bottles have a raised seal engraved in the glass.

Perched on a 62-meter-high limestone hillock, Château Quintus is located at the south-western end of the Saint-Emilion plateau. Surrounded by some of the most eminent estates in Saint-Emilion, the property boasts some of the finest land and exposures in the region. The originality of this extraordinary terroir lies in its diversity of soils, slopes and orientations. Made up of 28 hectares of vines that have today attained an optimum average age of 30 years, the estate naturally wraps itself around a high natural promontory and also offers 360breath-taking views across to the village of Saint-Emilion and over the entire Dordogne valley.
The vines of Château Quintus extend over a remarkable landscape. The form of the land itself is characterised by a stratum of limestone that lies in criss-cross shelves across the south-facing slopes of the plateau. The limestone to the north of the property is replaced by a varied mixture of clayey sands and gravels, dipping towards the south.
Merlot represents 66% of the surface in production and the rest, 26% is planted with Cabernet Franc and 8% with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Information

The year 2015 appears to be the warmest and sunniest, throughout our country, since the beginning of meteorological statistics. A long heat wave and dry period allowed to achieve excellent flowering conditions until the arrival, in August, of miraculous rains.
This rain enabled the vines to maintain the necessary water reserves and to provide requisite nourishment for perfect ripeness. The harvest began in September under a clear blue sky. Thanks to this ideal weather, we were able to wait for optimum ripeness for each grape variety.
All the conditions are there to allow 2015 to join the greatest vintages of Bordeaux.

Written Notes

Quintus 2015 was yummy, full of perfectly ripe sweet fruit, silky and captivating. 93+p. Dragon deQuintus 2015 was a more concentrated copy of 2017. 87p.

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Elegant nose with wonderful spiciness, dark berries, black cherries and ripe elderberries. On the palate well structured with ripe and quite massive tannins, elegant spiciness and juicy fruit, excellent length.

  • 95p
Closed and subtle. Pretty powerful and weighty. Loads of fruit in the palate with medium long finish. Somehow the wine was not open at the moment when I tasted. Ir would need longer time to wake up. It also came to be a bit alcoholic in mouth and comparatively the second wine, Le Dragon de Quintus did give a lot of freshness and surprise. 90-92
  • 91p
Deep colour. Dark plum, dark chocolate with ginger notes. Rich and chocolaty with dark plum slight saline notes, savoury cedar oak notes, plush tannins and mineral length. Alcoholic kick at the finish. Very good concentration. 92 points

Quintus Saint Emilion Grand Cru - 76% Merlot 24% Cabernet Franc Deep purple, the nose shines, very polished, lovely menthol tinged black fruit, beautiful aromatics, and there is intensity as well as opulence here, layered, spicy, quite a stunning palate, rides effortlessly into the finale which is spice inflected and chalky. It is so well balanced won't be long before its showing if it doesn't close down. 93-95/100, 2022-2050
