Deep crimson red, with a dark core.Concentrated and layered, expressing classical violets and sweet spice. Rich cassis is the central theme, effortlessly lifted by sage, nutmeg and bay leaf notes. Lush blackberries are infused with aromatic leather cream and spice characters. Framed by fine powdery tannin, the wine is woven tightly together by defined and integrated oak. The lasting impression is of a complex and focussed wine, centered on dark fruits.

The Story

First produced in 1954, and widely known as Black Label, Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has established a reputation for displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is produced from only the top 20-25% of Cabernet fruit available from Wynns Coonawarra Estate. A wine of style and stature, and a perennial favourite in auction circles, the Black Label is one of Australia’s most collectable wines and Australia’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon.  It consistently delivers the potential for medium to long-term cellaring, with the average vineyard age for Wynns Black Label over 35 years.

Wine Information

The cool 2011 season saw a much smaller quantity of this important benchmark wine being produced, from our traditional old vineyards. True to its ideals, the 56th vintage of this wine catalogues a remarkably cool season for Coonawarra.

Written Notes

First vintage was 1954. This is undoubtedly Wynn’s most important wine. Langton's rate it the 6th most cellared wine in Australia. I thought it might have gone higher. They have never missed a vintage and even in a patchy year like 2011, Wynn’s were certainly going to source enough fruit to ensure continuity, although there is only a very small volume from this release. It spent 9 months in French oak, 40% of which was new. Wynn’s use eight different coopers and are continuing trials. When it comes to selecting the fruit for the Black Label, the winemakers say that the vineyards just “fall out”. They are almost always their heritage and iconic vineyards. In a usual vintage, the very top 1% of the fruit, both Shiraz and Cabernet, will go into the flagship wines, Michael and John Riddoch, with the next 20-25% into the Black Label wines. As there will be no 2011 vintage of either flagship, that 1% will go into the Black Label, for the Cabernet. The wine is tight and intense. Indeed, the level of intensity in comparison with the other 2011 wines is immediately obvious. This is a standout. Lovely varietal Cabernet flavours here. Blackberry notes. Also black olives, coffee grinds, cherries, dry herbs. Nicely seamless style yet plenty of tannins. Excellent length. Balanced and a good future. This is seriously impressive for the vintage.
