The Story

First made in 1982, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was conceived as a flagship wine for Wynns. John Riddoch himself was a true visionary. Amongst his many achievements are the building of the Wynns Gabled winery and the establishment of the Coonawarra Fruit Colony

John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is made in small quantities from the best available fruit grown on the estate's extensive Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in the heart of the terra rossa soil It has become a definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available, using less than one percent of the top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Wine Information

First made in 1982, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was conceived as a flagship wine for the Wynns portfolio. The wine honours pasturalist and parliamentarian, John Riddoch, who was the largest land-owner in South Australia's south-east corner. With his brother George, the two owned the freehold to more than 70,000 acres.

John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is made in small quantities from the best fruit available grown on the estate's extensive Cabernet plantings. It has since become the definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and it is arguably richer and more concentrated than any other wine in the region.

Made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available, less than one per cent of the top Cabernet grapes are used to make it.

Vineyard Region
Coonawarra

Vintage Conditions
Coonawarra experienced a slightly warmer than usual, dry summer with the grapes ripening evenly and early. Overall, perfect vintage weather with no rain offered a great opportunity to make wines of classic varietal character and longevity.

Grape Variety
Cabernet Sauvignon

Maturation
The wine spent 21 months in 52% new French oak, 20% new American oak and 28% in two year old French oak.

Colour
Deep red/black in colour, suggesting its strength and intensity.

Nose
Aromas of classic Coonawarra Cabernet - dark berries, cassis and violets. Freshly crushed mint and some lavender florals enter the fray.

Palate
Layers of dark plum and cassis are framed by dried rosemary, with lovely oak integration exhibiting smoked meats and spice. Fine grained tannins are tight and long, suggesting excellent cellaring potential.

Written Notes

The pick of this famous winery's releases from that vintage, a wine of power yet retaining elegance. Classic Coonawarra cab with a good future, finishing with finely managed tannins. Will cellar very well.
