The Story

The 2010 Messenger is our second release from this vineyard, planted in 1985. This dry-grown block has deeper terra rossa soils which produce great wines in warmer seasons, and it is fitting to acknowledge this quality with an individual label. The warm and even 2010 vintage was ideally suited for this vineyard, on the southern end of the terra rossa strip, providing the perfect showcase for this elegant, fine wine.

Written Notes

Wynn’s have released a single vineyard wine for many years now, kicking off with the 2001 vintage. That was their 'Harold' Cabernet Sauvignon. There was none from 2002. 2003 and 2004 saw the only blends – all others have been straight Cabernet. They were the 'Johnston' Cabernet Shiraz. The vineyard has Cabernet first planted in 1954 and Shiraz first planted in 1925. 2005 saw the first 'Messenger', a dry grown vineyard from the southern part of Coonawarra. 2006 was the 'Alex 88', planted by Wynn’s in 1988; 2007 and 2009 were both from the Glengyle vineyard; and the 2008 was from the Davis vineyard. There will be no 2011 single vineyard wine and no decision has been made as to 2012 but one would assume that the vintage will provide plenty of options. The 2010 is the second from the Messenger vineyard and it is a stunning wine. Sadly, small volume but at A$80, it is very much a bargain in world terms. Good luck finding much in Bordeaux or the Napa for a similar price that can rival this quality. A beautifully fragrant Cabernet, look for spice, blueberries, dark fruits and violets. There is also a hint of dark chocolate. Immaculately balanced. It saw 17 months in oak, 30% of which was new, but the integration is impeccable. There are very fine tannins and intensity is maintained on a very long finish. A cracker.
