    Having graduated from Sussex University I started in the wine trade with Avery's of Bristol in 1986. Having worked here for probably far too long, the drive to pass the MW exams led me to work in a number of wineries in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, California and Italy. 

    I eventually returned to the UK in 1993 to help establish the "New" Hatch Mansfield with Mark Calver and Patrick McGrath MW, where I am currently the Wine Director.

    Having graduated from Sussex University, Philip started his wine trade career at Avery's of Bristol. After five years, his drive to become a Master of Wine led him to various winemaking jobs in countries such as South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, California and eventually Tuscany. He returned to help start up the "New" HMA in 1994. Other than his commercial responsibilities, Philip is also responsible for the staff's wine education. Philip passed the MW exam in October 1999 and currently sits on the MW Council.

"Moulin a Vent, Clos de Rochegrès Chateau des Jacques 2015. This is certainly one of the best young Beaujolais I have tasted. 19+.
Lovely deep colour with impressive depth at the core. Fine, almost regal nose for a wine made from the humble Gamay. Really very impressive complexity and refinement already with subtle spicy oak. Very fine grip on a long finish completes this very impressive package. "

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blanc 2002 (Magnum) Very similar to the bottle but, for me, more complete and everso slightly more development and complexity. This seems more developed but also seems to have the balance and structure to keep, but there is a lovely nutty brioche character here.  Very fine. 19

Louis Roederer Cristal 1996 (Magnum) Absolutely stunning nose of great complexity, enticement and elegance which evolved beautifully in the glass.  Still lean and elegant as you would expect from the vintage. Immensely satisfying with plenty of time to go although it is difficult to imagine how it can continue to improve.  For once a Cristal that exceeds expectations!. Impressive.  The bottles tasted were also excellent.  19.5

"Graham’s 1955 vintage Port. Deeper colour than the ’63 although plenty of mahogany. Lovely complex, spicy lifted nose of Christmas cake and touch of cinnamon and tobacco. Scented an feminine. Hugely complex with perfect volatility for the fruit. Still impressive depth and real sweetness on the palate with seemed to last an eternity in the mouth. The spirit is clean and still integrated. This is perfect now and utterly delicious. Difficult to fault. 20."

"It is tempting to assume that a successful vintage for the red wines of Bordeaux will also result in a successful vintage in Sauternes but this is to simplistic a generalisation. Some vintages, such as 2005 are spectacularly successful everywhere in Bordeaux but this is comparatively unusual. It was a hot dry year with the cool nights so crucial to retaining acidity in the grapes. In contrast, 2003 has produced wines of more richness and amplitude that may age slightly quicker. This is probably the case for the reds as well. 2001 made up the triumvirate of exceptional but very different vintages at the beginning of the 21st Century with most commentators agreeing that its supreme balance and amazing concentration gives 2001 the nod over subsequent years. The intervening years were all challenging in their own ways but Suduiraut has lived up to its reputation of producing outstanding wines in the more difficult vintages by crafting spectacular results in both 2004 and 2002. As at Pichon, this has been achieved through rigorous selection in the vineyard and an often dramatic reduction in yields, illustrated clearly by the 5hl/ha for the Grand Vin in 2004 when 75% of the fruit was left on the ground."

"Château Pichon Longueville Baron Vintages 2000 – 2005
Three hyped vintages (2000, 2003 and 2005) and this hype is probably justified. All were hot ripe years but different in style despite all being very seductive and easy to appreciate when young such was their vibrancy of fruit.
The less hyped vintages of 2001, 2002 and 2004 are also considered very successful vintages at Pichon, largely through the improved vineyard management that Axa have introduced. All three years were classic in the true sense and full ripeness was achieved. Yields have been significantly reduced to an average of 35hl/ha which has in turn helped the grapes achieve full ripeness in the more challenging years. Yields prior to 1990 were in the region of 55hl/ha.

"Château Lafleur-Pétrus 2005 / “You can smell the heat of the gravel here” remarked Edouard, and this wine did have a strange but attractive earthiness to it. Very tight again yet there is also a clear pluminess to the fruit as well as the floral vanilla tones from the new oak. Certainly youthful. Certainly great potential but somewhat disjointed and clumsy at the moment. Very Pomerol in style. Drink 2015 -2025. "

Welcome to the Tastingbook, the world's first intelligent wine-tasting tool and social wine community.

It is easy and fast to use, and I am happy to guide you through it.


1. Start by Signing up and creating your profile

- Add a profile picture and more information about yourselves


2. Next, Create your personal Wine World

- Click iFollow (Discover) from the top menu

- Tastingbook has added automatically into your wine world 5-10 of the most active professionals or Pro's as we call them.

- Search for more pros or other users by typing their name in the search field. Then click into my world to those who you want to include in your wine world. This way, you may be notified when they taste wines or comment on them.

- You can also add wines and wine producers into your wine world. This allows you to access the most up-to-date information about them.


3. Invite your friends to join the tastingbook

- Click your username on the top menu and choose invite

- Type your friends email addresses and click send invites

- You can follow the status of your invitation on the same page


4. Create a tasting and do tasting notes

4.1. Click the New tasting button from the top menu.

- Name the tasting as you wish.

- Set the place and time (You can also add your past tasting notes by just changing the date)

- Click the add new wine button on the right to add new wines to the tasting.

- Now go to the box that says 'Click to add the wine'.

- Start by typing the wine or producer name and select the wine from the list that appears.

- After you have selected the wine, the vintage selection will be opened automatically

- Select the correct vintage by clicking on it.


4.2. Next, click My tasting note box and the worlds most advanced tasting

- From the bottom left of the tasting tool you can select in which language you want to use and view tasting notes.

- just do your wine note by clicking the correct adjectives. The adjectives can be activated by clicking once, or de-activated by clicking again.

- Tastingbook Pros will teach you while you taste wines.

At the bottom of the page in the section Show notes of, you may view notes of the professionals by clicking Pro's. If any of the tastingbook pros have tasted the wine before their opinion will show in the gold colored frames around the adjectives on the tasting view.


4.3. After you have completed your wine note, it's time to give Tb points.

Click the box on the bottom right Give points.
In case you want to add any comment or personal thoughts related to this wine, you may tick the note box next to the scores. In this field you may add copy-pasted texts for instance your old notes, etc.


4.4. After you've completed your notes for all the wines, click Close tasting.

You may now share some general thoughts about the tasting or tasted wines and choose with whom you want share your tasting. Set the Tasting privacy to limit the audience who are able to view your tastings information. We suggest you use Everyone as most of the wine experiences are meant to be shared.

Note:

If a wine that you are tasting is not found in our database, please be kind enough to send us an email to: addwine@thetastingbook.com, please include at least the wine name and producer. We will add the wine in tastingbook within 24 hours.


5. Tastingbook is full of information and stories - how to find them.

Tastingbook is full of information about wines, vintages, and wineries and also has over 30.000 pictures of wines. To best way to find what you are looking for is to browse the site from the Browse field in the top right corner.

You may search for wine, vintage, producer, pros or other community members by typing the name in the browse field. You may then choose from the drop down menu.



If you have any difficulty in navigating the site you may easily get help by clicking the support button on the left side of the page
