The Story

Classed as a Premier Cru in 1855, it is made from grapes selected from the finest terroirs of the property. This wine is hand crafted at every stage of its elaboration and reveals remarkable finesse and complexity and a golden colour reminiscent of the sun that made it possible. With age the bright gold evolves to a dark amber colour.
With an extensive life-span, it powerfully and harmoniously combines fruit and floral aromas with roasted and candied notes.

Its superlative elegance comes from a match of total opposites: a voluptuous texture, mineral freshness and the heat of spices. Château Suduiraut is designed for all those who enjoy sensory and emotional experiences that are both rich and full of surprises and leave a lasting memory.

Wine Information

2005 is an exceptional vintage in many respects. The year was marked by drought throughout the seasons, offset by cool night-time temperatures (contrary to 2003). Ripening was slow but complete. Between September 9 and 12, 60 mm of rain enabled the initial contamination. 

The set-in of typical “Sauternes” weather, with early morning mists and warm sunny days, boosted the spread of the botrytis and the resultant concentration of the grapes. Welcome light rain triggered the set-in of the botrytis in early October. It subsequently developed marvellously thanks to a long period of uninterrupted sunshine. 

 

Vine management was normal. Controlled leaf removal was performed due to the sunshine. A particular effort of cluster thinning was made on certain plots (about 15 hectares) to maintain an optimal concentration of the quality. 

From September 26 to November 7, with a total of 4 passes. The harvest was generous, shared between raisining during the first pass and botrytis for the others. Thanks to the fine weather in October, the successive passes followed on without interruption except for the last one, set back by a brief spell of bad weather in early November.

Vintage 2005

Bordeaux Vintage Report 2005 is a truly fantastic vintage with great quality across the board on both the Left and Right Banks.

The 2005 vintage became the most expected since 2000. The en primeur market was heated, and prices skyrocketed. The cold winter delayed the bud break before the hot ans dunny spring broke up. Even vegetative growth and flowering gave a perfect start to the vintage. The summer turned out to be one of the driest ever which was avoiding disaster since the weather remained reasonably warm not excessively hot as in 2003. The soil is again becoming a decisive quality factor. Gravelly areas, such as Graves, were worst affected once more. In other words, top wines are to be expected.

For short term perspective, in the next couple of years, an excellent amount of mature red Bordeaux wines will be available in the market. The vintages 2004, 2002, 1999, 1994, 1992 and 1988 offer a wide selection of enjoyable wines to be consumed immediately or at most to be stored for a short period.

As investments, the best vintages from the past 35 years are 2003, 1996, 1989, 1986 and 1982. The most certain long-term investments are Latour, La Mission Haut-Brion, Haut-Brion, Le Pin and Pétrus.

In the last 35 years, Bordeaux has undergone a substantial change in winemaking. Modern equipment and developing know-how have guaranteed more even quality. It seems that the next challenge will be handling the extreme climates including slowly global warming, which has already given hints of its effects also in Bordeaux. It is impossible to say how the Bordeaux wines will change in the next 35 years. We can only hope that their most characteristic feature, elegant aristocratic nature highlighted by unique terroir, will never fade away.

Well-Integrated, Well-structured, Harmonious, Rich, Fresh and Sweet

Written Notes

95% Semillon, 5% Sauvignon Blanc. 165 g/l RS, 13.5% alc, 19hl/ha. 18 months 50% new oak. Great Classic vintage. “The richest wine ever at Suduiraut” (Seeley). Medium gold colour. Rich, peachy, pineapple, candied Orange peel nose with well integrated oak already. Obviously fully sweet on the palate but with a delightful freshness that holds the sweetness together beautifully. Very long and concentrated. Amazingly unctuous yet still elegant. Drink 2012 – 2040.

Medium colour. Sweet pear/ almond aromas with some savoury oak characters. The palate is beautifully balanced with pear/ apricot/ almond/ brioche flavours and fine indelible/ mineral acidity. Finishes dry and almondy. A very classical beautifully made wine.
