The Story

Each year, Château Beauséjour hDL takes into consideration the quality of the harvest and adapts its vinification accordingly. A subtle balance between the frequency and intensity of the "pumping-over" process must respect the wine's maceration, which varies in duration, in order to extract the best tannins.

For over thirty years, the Michel Rolland Laboratory has accompanied Château Beauséjour hDL during the vinification of each vintage. The wine is afterwards refined for 16 to 18 months in oak "shook" barrels, then aged in bottles at a constant temperature in limestone quarries.


A portion of the vineyard is rooted in argilo-calcareous soil with an asteriated subsoil, while the remaining vines are rooted in the limestone that, here and there, rises to the surface at the top of the hill. 


Today, the vineyard's varietals are made up of 81% Merlot, which particularly appreciates the coolness and humidity of the clayey soil and contributes fruitiness and fullness to the château's wines, and 19% Cabernet (16% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon), which provides powerful aroma and structure. On average, the vines are between 35 and 40 years old.

Written Notes

The soil here, a limestone one, is exceptional, and in 2022 it has “cooled” down the vines with a fantastic result! For me, 2022 marks a style change towards a more elegant, refined, and sophisticated one than vintages 2019, 2018, and 2016. A wine with a well-integrated mix of finesse and power, minerality, and Burgundian delicacy and opulence of highly-esteemed Grand Cru wines from Chambolle Musigny/Gevrey Chambertin. The blend has 10% more C. Franc than in previous vintages - 69% Merlot + 31% C. Franc; the harvest of Merlot took place from the 6th to the 9th of September, and C. Franc was collected on the 23rd of September. ABV is 14.9%, but you can’t feel it while tasting. This is a mind-boggling effort and clear proof of extraordinary winemaking skills from Josephine Duffau Lagarrosse. Bravo!! 98-100p.

Ruby.Graphite, blackberries, detailed, floral, nuanced, layered nose, nuanced, bright yet intense and deep.Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, spices, dark fruits, liquorice, nuanced, long. Stunning. Such an energy to it. pH 3,5.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very aromatic and sophisticated nose with fragrant fruit, ripe mulberries, wild strawberries and discreet hints of cherries backed by balmy spices. Floral hints reminiscent of roses and peonies, noble toasting and subtle oak. On the palate a densely woven wine with great precision and freshness, silky tannins, sweet fruit quoting the nose, excellent depth and length. A wonderful Beauséjour in purity.
