The Story

Our Grand Vin Château Pichon Baron, classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is made with grapes from the oldest vines on the estate’s historic plots. This quintessential Pauillac offers an intense and profound sensory experience of great complexity. Château Pichon Baron exhibits elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. It is a wine that improves year after year and can age for over 40 years in the cellar.

The reputation of Pichon Baron until the 1960s was superior to that of Pichon Lalande across the road, it was also placed above Pichon Lalande in the Classification of 1855. But on the death of Jean Bouteillier in 1961 its reputation began to sink. His eldest son Bertrand was still young and inexperienced and there was a lack of money for necessary investments leading to a decline in quality of the wines during the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s there were signs of recovery but not at the same speed as with many other properties during this time and certainly nowhere near that of Pichon-Lalande that had prospered enormously under the care of May de Lencquesaing to become one of the first "Super-seconds".

Wine Information

Parcel selection produces a remarkably diverse range of wine profiles. It is this variety that gives the final blends their richness and sophistication. To produce a successful blend, over 40 different wines are tasted in a series of strictly-controlled tastings. Blending is a highly complex procedure which changes from one year to the next, giving each vintage its distinctive character.

Upon removal from the vats, the best batches are set aside to make Château Pichon Baron’s Grand Vin. Most are initially aged in new barrels made from the finest French oak. Three months later they are tasted again, and the final blend is assembled.

The wine slowly adjusts during barrel ageing, which lasts for 18 to 20 months.

2016 Pichon Baron - With an incredibly dark hue, the wine is as expected, concentrated, full bodied, rich, multi-layered and multi-faceted. Once the wine is in the glass, your met with waves of ripe, dark, red fruits and a wall of tannin. But everything is perfectly ripe and falls exactly into place. The finish sticks with you for close to 60 seconds. This is a cellar worthy stunner that demands 10-15 years of age before you want to pull a cork, but patience is going to be a virtue here. 99 Pts

2016 Pichon Baron was very aromatic and intense on the nose, very powerful yet elegant at the same time, rich, noble and with meaty finish. Exceptional effort. 97+p

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a suave and seductive nose of warm red and black currants, black plum preserves, truffles, tapenade and rose hip tea with touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice plus a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, firmly structured and packed with mineral and exotic spice-laced black fruits, it finishes very long with compelling herbal sparks.

Deep glossy colour. Intense dark blackcurrant black cherry aromas with integrated roasted coffee, chestnut aromas.  Well concentrated, rich and chocolaty wine with black currant, almost paneforte fruit, with balsamic notes and savoury espresso oak. Builds up oaky and tannin firm with plenty of rich fruit flavours. One of the more dense and robust styles, yet harmonious and elegant. Tasted at Ch Pichon Longueville Baron. 95 points

The quintessence of typicity. Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Fantastic nose with well defined fruit, great precision, excellent toasting aroma, hints of mild spices, elegant use of oak. On the palate excellent structure in a very classic way however with a touch of sweetness not seen before. A great wine with complexity and elegance. 98

Sisäpiiritietoa

Vinification comprises a complex maceration process of grape skins and pulp.

Fermentation transforms the sugars into alcohol, breaking down the tannins and colours, and drawing out the wine’s aromatic components. Maturation lasts between three and four weeks. A wine’s success depends on the monitoring of the process – on a daily basis – for each vat.

When the wine’s malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine reaches a natural state of equilibrium. The vats are emptied and select portions of the wine are put into barrels.

The wine is aged in barrels in the semi-darkness of the cellars. It is racked every three to four months, using the traditional candle method, to separate the wine from the lees.
