Bright, vibrant, intense purple hue.Dominated by concentrated red currants, cherries and raspberry aromas, which mesh with black olive, mulberry and white spice. A complex nose with abundant & layered fruit.The palate combines a fine & elegant structure with generous fruit. Red berries and dark brooding spice fill the mouth, supported by soft ripe tannins and balanced stylish oak. The wine has controlled red fruits, succulent acid and many complex layers.

The Story
Michael Shiraz is Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s best-of-vintage Shiraz. The fruit used for this wine comes from the best vineyard sites in Coonawarra and is only made in years when the best quality fruit is available. The first Michael (then called Michael Hermitage) was a one-off from the 1955 vintage, made after proprietor David Wynn noticed the outstanding quality of the wine from two particular barrels and ordered them to be bottled separately. Named after David Wynn’s young son, this is a legendary Australian wine.

Near-optimum rainfall over winter, followed by dry, mild conditions over spring provided a good environment for budburst and an ideal start to the growing season with canopies developing well. Climatic conditions favoured flowering and set with mild and calm weather, however there was some shatter in Shiraz across parts of the state resulting in small crops for many regions. Some early to mid-December summer rainfall was followed by conditions drying up very quickly and continuing until the end of February. Summer was hot with some extreme heat but cool conditions returned in February and March, allowing the fruit to ripen across a long harvest with balanced acidities and excellent tannin ripeness.
