Wine Description
The Story
Wynns is the Coonawarra's most recognised wine producer. With substantial vineyard holdings on the famous thin strip of terra rossa soil, the wines are benchmarks for the region and lauded for both their quality and flavour.
Led by one of Australia's best-known winemakers, Sue Hodder has been guiding vintages at Wynns for over 23 years. In 2010, her partnership with viticulturalist Allen Jenkins, was recognised when they were awarded joint recipients of the Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Winemaker of the Year.
The Siding is named after the railway siding - a local landmark that played a defining role during Coonawarra's early settlement.
"the aim of this wine is to deliver a leading affordable Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing exceptional varietal and regional characteristics of red cherry, mint and dark berry flavours, while an array of gentle tannins will further reward from short to medium term cellaring" - Sue Hodder.
Vintage 2009
Near-optimum rainfall over winter, followed by dry, mild conditions over spring provided a good environment for budburst and an ideal start to the growing season with canopies developing well. Climatic conditions favoured flowering and set with mild and calm weather, however there was some shatter in Shiraz across parts of the state resulting in small crops for many regions. Some early to mid-December summer rainfall was followed by conditions drying up very quickly and continuing until the end of February. Summer was hot with some extreme heat but cool conditions returned in February and March, allowing the fruit to ripen across a long harvest with balanced acidities and excellent tannin ripeness. An elegant, yet still powerful follow up to the conditions brought about in the preceding 2008 vintage |
