The Story

Prado Enea is the flagship wine at Muga, a steadfastly traditional Gran Reserva that is typically only produced 4 or so years per decade. A few key data points make it unique. Let's begin with the vines themselves, which are located in Sajazarra, a village amongst the coldest growing regions of Rioja Alta, further west from Haro and with harvest dates that typically extend well into October, even into November! In addition to Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and approximately 10% Mazuelo and Graciano are blended in. This creates freshness as the latter two are higher acid grapes, which tends to result in fresh, low pH wines that age for long periods of time. Finally, in the cellar, there are various types and formats of wood vessels, from huge "tinas" to smaller new barrels, which are employed through experienced, time tested elevage to provide the wine ample opportunity to develop its stability and complexity.

Along with the grapes for Torre Muga, the Prado Enea grapes are always the last to be brought into the winery. In this way we ensure an ideal level of ripeness. The grapes are always fermented in 10,000 kilo capacity oak vats without temperature control and no addition of yeasts. The maceration period varies but can continue for as long as twenty days. This wine is aged for 12 months in 16,000-litre oak vats, thirty-six months (minimum) in oak casks and thirty-six months (minimum) in the bottle. After ageing it is lightly fined using fresh egg whites.

Written Notes

Still quite firm and restrained, a muscular iteration of Rioja. Grainy tannins with dry, austere fruit. A bit cheerless compared with its usual outgoing self?

This Gran Reserva Prado Enea displays an attractive, deep, dense cherry-red colour.

A stylish nose of black fruits mingling with spices, gingerbread and liquorice. The soft, supple entry on the palate leads to a sensation of gentle power and air-light volume underpinned by cashmere silky tannins, harmoniously balanced by fresh acidity. Creamy, vanilla notes come through in the finish with ripe fruit. This wine is tempting to drink now, but it will age well for years.

2015 Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva
Ruby. One of the tightest Rioja’s I have tasted, so firm and tight knit. After some six hours in decanter it shows dark fruits, some tobacco, mint, After Eight chocolate, blackberries, vanilla and spices. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, blackberries and spices, juicy, elegant texture, finally it is letting go, showing new depth, if you are to drink this the next few years, give it hours in decanter. This was usual in the olden days, now much more rare. Maybe I had a tight bottle. But it took six hours to sing. But became impressive when it finally forgot to be shy! 94

Good looking normal size bottle, in an perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is ruby red, and looking bright and medium. On the nose it is intense, complex and refined. The taste is elegant, round, ripe, fruity, and dry, warming, with medium tannin, with silky tannins, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, with perfectly balanced, multi-dimensional structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has dried-fruit, blackberry, cedar, cherry and coffee flavours. The finish is long and gentle. This wine is outstanding. I paid around 50-100€ a bottle. Good value for money. I do recommend.
