The Story

Our first release from Stuart and Janine Barclay’s Wondalma Vineyard. This site was first planted in 1992, north of the town of Tumbarumba on a north-east slope in the foothills of the NSW Snowy mountains. The vineyard is 12.5 hectares at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level, and the vines are grown in basalt soil. The Barclay’s viticulture is meticulous and focusses on shading of the fruit to reduce the incidence of exposed/yellow fruit....

Wine Information

Careful winemaking has resulted in a near perfect green tinted, yellow colour. Excellent complexity on the nose/palate after pressing whole bunches and wild ferment in barrel. Roasted cashew notes from the fine French oak compliment the white peach and grapefruit characters, with a creaminess that is kept in check by the natural fruit acidity. A complex Chardonnay that will evolve over the next few years.

Written Notes

This Tumbarumba vineyard, the Wondalma Vineyard, was planted in 1992. A mix of two clones of Chardonnay, the fruit is whole bunch pressed and sees natural fermentation in French oak. Pale lemon with flecks of green, on the nose we have hints of cashews, nectarines, peaches and a touch of honeycomb. There is good concentration throughout. The wine is elegant and lingering, but it does have the requisite intensity. A Chardonnay that is all class. Drink this over the next six to eight years. Love it.
