94-96 THE WINEADVOCATE: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 La Gaffeliere reveals classically sophisticated scents of ripe black plums, warm blackberries and cigar box with touches of star anise, dried Provence herbs, chocolate mint and truffles. Full-bodied, it has a solid backbone of ripe, rounded tannins and lovely freshness lifting the densely layered fruit to a long finish."

The Story

A new approach starting in 1985

Stephan von Neipperg totally redefined viticulture and winemaking at Canon La Gaffelière, succeeding in reflecting the very best of what the estate has to offer. The present richness and concentration of its wines place Canon La Gaffelière among the top crus classés of Saint Emilion - which was exactly its position in the 1940s.

For quite some time, this siliceous terroir suffered from a fairly mediocre im...

Vintage 2018

Report and recommendations for the 2018 Bordeaux vintage

by Andrew Caillard MW

Written Notes

Tasted in September 2019. Much better than tasted in April 2019. Showing great sweetness, fat fruit and tannin, strong structure and long finish. I believe it'll improve in coming years as 2010 vintage here did.

Deep colour. Mulberry red plum mocha aromas and flavours. Generous and quite inky with mulberry red currant fruits, fine chalky tannins and roasted chestnut oak/ vanilla notes. Finishes firm and tight.

Inside Information

92-95 JEB DUNNUCK: "The grand vin of the estate, the 2018 Château La Gaffelière is a brilliant wine offering pure crème de cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as fabulous minerality. Medium to full-bodied, seamless, and elegant on the palate, it’s not a blockbuster but shines for its purity, balance, and just gorgeous texture. It will drink well with 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades."
