The Story

The vineyard is planted in 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. At around five hectares, Certan de May is a tiny jewel poised between Vieux Château Certan and Petrus. It was very strong in the 1980's, then slipped a little through the 1990's. From 2005 onwards the estate has been back on track, producing elegant yet fleshy and flamboyant wines at a very reasonable price.

Vintage 1945

The best vintage in the world – 1947 or 1945? Tastingbook has tasted all the best wines from these two great vintages.

If wine producers from different regions were asked to name the best vintages in their wine history, most would name 1947 or 1945 as one of the greats. If we then compared them, there would probably only be one vintage that most, if not all, producers had named on the list – 1947.

Written Notes

The next wine had a hint of oxidation, paint-like in its impression, although our host insisted we give it some time to allow that paint ‘to crack off.’ The palate was decadent, rich, oily and thick with hints of port and ‘layers.’ It was still rich and saucy and what I would consider an outstanding wine despite the nose, as it was cleaner on the palate, and air continued to benefit the wine, as flavors of chocolate and bread pudding developed. Our host smiled after the wine, and all of us, came around, admiring its ‘bakery’ aromas and how it was ‘packed with fruit and acidity.’ It was a1945 Certan de May

Among all the stellar bottles at this 1945 dinner, the one I anticipated more than any other was the 1945 Certan-de-May. Why? Well, it is impossibly rare. In fact, I have never even seen a bottle from before the 1970s. Deep in color, it has a remarkably opulent bouquet offering black cherries, camphor, honey and astonishing intensity, to the point where I have to question its authenticity. The palate is medium-bodied with cashmere tannins, ravishing blackberry and blueberry fruit and a strong menthol finish that dare I say reminds me of a Priorat! Is this real? I would have unhesitatingly said "no," except that the tasting note penned by one Robert Parker reads similar to mine! I will leave a question mark against my score. Tasted at Koala's 1945 dinner.
