The Story

The vineyard is planted in 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. At around five hectares, Certan de May is a tiny jewel poised between Vieux Château Certan and Petrus. It was very strong in the 1980's, then slipped a little through the 1990's. From 2005 onwards the estate has been back on track, producing elegant yet fleshy and flamboyant wines at a very reasonable price.

Written Notes

2016 was strong, dense and tight, with lot of velvety fruit and tannin. Meaty with great complexity and structure. Precise winemaking. 96p.

Deep crimson. Fresh musky plum, spicy, dukkah aromas. Well concentrated buoyant wine with fleshy dark plum, musky, Parma violet flavours, fine chalky grainy textures and balanced new vanilla oak complexity. Finishes dark chocolaty and long. Generous and velvety wine. Tasted at JP Moueix. 93 points

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Excellent nose with aroma reminiscent of liquorice, violets and mild spices, restrained fruit in the background. On the palate well structured with hints of liquorice and elegant fruit. Tannins are ripe, the wine displays a wonderful freshness and excellent length with lingering berry fruit. 95
