The Story

The Château Lafite estate run by the Rothschilds is, with its 100 hectares of cultivated land, the largest of the main Pauillac vineyards.

It is located in the highest part of the area and the view from its château, with its conical towers that appear on the label, takes in the banks of the River Gironde, which flows nearby. The wines are a blend of four different varieties of grape – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Cabernet F...

Written Notes

The 1868 Lafite-Rothschild marks the de Rothschild family's first vintage after acquiring the estate, so it was a privilege to drink one of the a handful of extant bottles from their bin to celebrate the 150th anniversary. This originates from pre-phylloxera vines on their own rootstock. The growing season was marred by a rainy August, but then intense heat meant that picking began on 7 September. Firstly, the colour is clean, no turbidity and slightly deeper than I anticipate. The bouquet is utterly entrancing with scents of cigar box, pot-pourri and a worn-in pair of brogues. Even after 30 minutes I notice not a trace of oxidation or deterioration. The palate is beautifully balanced with exquisite tannins, something floral – pressed flowers lying in the drawer of an antique mahogany bureau. Age notwithstanding, the 1868 is an intoxicating and beguiling Lafite-Rothschild and whilst not close to the otherworldly 1870, it is just a beautiful old Claret. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild 150th anniversary dinner at the estate.
