The Story

The Château Lafite estate run by the Rothschilds is, with its 100 hectares of cultivated land, the largest of the main Pauillac vineyards.

It is located in the highest part of the area and the view from its château, with its conical towers that appear on the label, takes in the banks of the River Gironde, which flows nearby. The wines are a blend of four different varieties of grape – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Cabernet F...

NEWS: BORDEAUX 2021 VINTAGE by Pros:What Critics Thinks?

Antonio Galloni, Vinous : "The 2021 Bordeaux have turned out to be such a surprise. Weather conditions were challenging, and yet the top properties turned out gorgeous, classically built wines that will absolutely thrill readers who appreciate freshness and energy. Restrained alcohols and mid-weight structures will remind readers of Bordeaux pre-2000s. The best wines offer a striking ...

Written Notes

Lafite's technical director, Eric Kohler, prepared the 2021 vintage for us to taste. We sampled the elegant and smooth second wine, Moulin de Duhart (88 points), the powerful and rich Duhart Milon (92+ points), the very complex Carruaders de Lafite with its splendid midpalate (93 points), and the multilayered and sophisticated Grand Vin (97 points).

The 2021 Lafite-Rothschild, which was aged in 90% new oak, has a deep, almost opaque hue. This has quite an arresting bouquet with dense blackberry, sous-bois and pencil box scents, quintessential Lafite aromas with nuanced floral scents surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied, though with more weight than you would expect given the growing season. The Cabernet Sauvignon imparts graphite and almost briny elements into the aromatic profile. Sapid and classic in style, head winemaker Eric Kohler suggests that it is a return to the style of Lafite-Rothschild of the nineties in terms of freshness. I concur.

Deep colour. Classical blackcurrant, blackberry, hint cedar aromas with mocha herb notes. Richly concentrated yet elegantly styled with pure blackcurrant, blackberry fruits, fine slinky/chalky dry tannins, attractive mid-palate volume, roasted chestnut, hint malt oak. Finishes grainy/ al dente firm with bittersweet notes. Impressive power, density and focus. A first wine made from almost 100% cabernet sauvignon. 96% cabernet sauvignon, 3% merlot, 1% petit verdot.

Polished and refined with a firm, fine and linear tannin structure. Harmonious. Perfumed violets, roses and subtle licorice. All in balance here, with precise layers of black fruit, minerals and pencil lead. Rather seamless. Firm, yet fine and sleek to the end. Very classy. Fine-velvet texture. 96% cabernet sauvignon, 3% merlot and 1% petit verdot. 97-98

Ruby. Scented, blackberries, cassis, dark fruits, nuanced and detailed, layered nose, intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, anise, detailed, dark fruits, nuanced and long, layered, incredible length with sublime balance. 12,6% alcohol. 96-98

Intense purple colour with violet hue and black core. Impressing nose with fragrant fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries, hints of mulberries and violets, subtle oak, hints of gingerbread spices and vanilla, fine minerality. On the palate very elegant with excellent depth and length, the sublimation of elegance, refined fruit, discreet floral hints, ripe and silky tannins and very persistent finish. A great Lafite in a very classic style but in a contemporary interpretation.
