1864 Chateau Lafite Rothschild

92 Points Robert Parker
“Except for the 1966 and 1870 vintages of Lafite-Rothschild, these wines were poured on virgin territory on my palate. The other great classics from the last century were remarkable wines, all with original corks, and in extraordinary condition.

Their age was authenticated by Michael Broadbent, who is the only person in the world to have the good fortune to have tasted these wines o...

The Story

The Château Lafite estate run by the Rothschilds is, with its 100 hectares of cultivated land, the largest of the main Pauillac vineyards.

It is located in the highest part of the area and the view from its château, with its conical towers that appear on the label, takes in the banks of the River Gironde, which flows nearby. The wines are a blend of four different varieties of grape – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Cabernet F...

Wine Information

1864 was the first quite large crop after the devastation caused by powdery mildew, which appeared in 1852 and was brought under control as from 1860. The 1864 vintage enjoyed an excellent reputation; the wines were both powerful and mellow, much more attractive than the great majority of wines of that era.

Written Notes

This superb wine derives from one of the best vintages of the 19th century. Excess amount of heat during the growing season can be felt in this wine as moderately high level of alcohol and very ripe almost sweet fruitiness. Fine looking bottle with Christie’s label. Level was mid-shoulder. Decanted 30 minutes.

The colour is amber red with plenty of fine sediment. The nose is surprisingly intense with spice and cigar notes. Even hints of blackcurrants can be sensed. Medium-bodied palate possesses sweet dark fruit and spicy ginger tones and moderately high acidity. High alcohol adds roundness and sweet tones to the moderately long mineral finish. Delicious wine drinking very well still!
