The 2015 Lafite-Rothschild is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot picked between 17 September and 6 October. Matured in 100% new oak, it has a tightly-wound bouquet with black cherries, cassis, cedar and graphite, though it does not quite possess the depth one would have expected the vintage would have bestowed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, harmonious on the entry and...

The Story

The Château Lafite estate run by the Rothschilds is, with its 100 hectares of cultivated land, the largest of the main Pauillac vineyards.

It is located in the highest part of the area and the view from its château, with its conical towers that appear on the label, takes in the banks of the River Gironde, which flows nearby. The wines are a blend of four different varieties of grape – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Cabernet F...

Wine Information

A recurring phenomenon in recent years, the beginning of the winter was mild and dry, and it was only at the end of January that beneficial colder temperatures arrived, accompanied by rain. Bud break began in early April as usual, and the vines then grew quickly, as they had ample reserves of water and the weather was mild. In June, flowering was early and uniform, which is always a promising sign.

Vintage 2015

Complete 2015 Bordeaux report by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line of a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 & 2015.”

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with marvellous concentration and structure. Give another year in barrel, the wines should gain more fruit complexity and volume. The Châteaux, across all sub-region...

Tasted in November 2021. 91% C. Sauvignon + 9% Merlot, 12.5% alcohol. Simply a fabulous nose of red berries and graphite, totally mesmerizing on the palate with captivating intensity, complexity and depth. Multilayered and sophisticated. Silky fruit and grained tannin. Long lingering finish. Fantastic wine. 98-99p.

The 2015 Lafite-Rothschild, bottled in May 2017, is refined and pure on the bouquet with scents of blackberry and bilberry, touches of violet and as usual, from a slightly subdued beginning it opens magnificently with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, with edgier tannin than many Lafite-Rothschilds I tasted a decade ago, wonderfully balanced with that sense of "vibrancy" that I remarked upon previously. The 2015 is only on the opening page of a long story, but I suspect that it will evolve into a splendid Lafite-Rothschild. Tasted in Bordeaux at a private tasting.

Ruby. Scented, bright, nuanced, almost brilliant expression, filigree, floral, superbly detailed nose even at this early stage. The precision in this! Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, red berries, anise, bright, fruity, refreshing and nuanced. Perfect harmony and details in this one. Superb length. Drink over the next sixty years or so. And invite me. Drink over the next seventy years or so. 99

Lustrous mid crimson. Lightly spicy nose and very smooth tannins in the Lafite style. Only just enough acidity. Blurry impression. Mild and charming - very restrained and Lafite. It builds on the end in an impressive manner. 18/20 points (4/2016)

Dark purple red with violet hue. Very attractive nose, multi-layered, with pure fruit, very precisely structured, discreet hints of spices. On the palate great depth and length with pure fruit, fine acidity, silky tannins and long lingering fruit in the finish. Attractive and approachable fruit in the first moment, well structured mid-palate and never-ending length in the finish. A complex and great Lafite.

Medium deep colour. Cassis, dark chocolate espresso violet aromas with graphite notes. Well concentrated wine with cassis blackberry fruit, graphite nuances, fine gritty tannins touch Al-dente. Attractive inky complete its. Build up velvety firm and tight. Lovely mineral length. Classical and well balanced. Light but heavy. Lafite style. 97 points

Lafite Rothschild Pauillac - 91% Cabernet Sauvignon 9% Merlot Good deep plum, nose again is quite tight, there is a pinpoint character to the aromatics, the palate is very textured, and layered, a sizeable black block here, a bit looser knit than usual, earthy notes on the finish, and the tannins are very ripe, long and fine. 93-96/100
