Written Notes

The 1942 Croft Vintage Port is a commendable Port within the backdrop of the war. The vintage commenced on 2 September in cool, dull climes and due to hostilities it ended up being the first Croft almost entirely bottled in Portugal. Sure, the nose is rather enervated with touches of orange peel and dried blood, the bouquet becoming ever more smoky in the glass. But the palate is better: harmonious, cohesive, slightly viscous with that lovely, refined finish that graces the ’35. If the aromatics were better it would score well into the nineties, but as such it simply remains a very fine wartime Port, purportedly the best of the ‘42s. Tasted in the Factory House in Porto for "Taylor's - The Story of a Classic Port House" book.
