In spite of the hot summer, the grapes matured slowly and evenly, producing perfectly balance musts. picking started later than usual with most estates, including Croft’s Quinta da Roêda, starting their harvests in the second half of September. Notes taken at the harvest mention the fine fruit aromas of the musts and the pronounced tannins.”

“The Croft 2016 is very much in style, displaying opulent fruit and a resiny herbal dimension contributed by the old vineyard at Quinta da Roêda. At the same time, it has the purity and balance which are key characteristics of the year."

The Story

Quinta da Roêda forms the backbone of the Croft Vintage Porto, produced only in years when vineyard conditions are optimal and warrant a “declared vintage.” Wines from Quinta da Roêda are characteristically plump, full and vigorously fruity, with the hallmark aroma of the gum cistus bush—a character that informs the Croft house style. The grapes are trod by foot in granite lagares to minimize the release of harsh, bitter compounds from skins and seeds, and the wine spends two years aging in vat before bottling. Croft Vintage Porto will continue to develop in the bottle and may be cellared for decades before opening.

Vintage 2016

The 2016 harvest in the Douro brought perfectly-timed rain that turned a good year into a great one. Fortunately, despite a challenging growing season and a much adjusted and delayed picking schedule, those producers with excellent vineyard knowledge and confident decision-making, were rewarded with spectacular Vintage Ports.

Another famous House, which has been part of the Fladgate Partnership since 2001. This is one of the 16s which lean towards the red fruit end of the spectrum, with tobacco leaf notes. The aromas are delightfully lifted and there is plenty of juicy, quality fruit to be found. Aniseed notes. Hints of strawberries. Very fine tannins. A good future here. 94.

The 2016 Croft Vintage Port has a taut bouquet at first that demands a good 20 or 30 minutes to get into its stride. It eventually reveals scents of blackberry, bilberry, chimney soot, clove, and just a hint of scorched earth in the background. The palate is spicy and vivacious on the entry: black fruit, clove, white pepper and curry powder (almost like a Balti!) I love the personality imbued into this Croft, a Vintage Port that seems to be wearing its heart on its sleeve. Excellent. Production is 3,050 cases.

Purple colour. Aromas of orange citrus, orange zest and raspberry immediately obvious followed by cinamonn and black pepper, then blackcurrant. The palate is offers a silky texture with concentrated black and red fruits. There are subtle herbal notes also such oregano and basil coming through. The finish is very long with a savoury edge. Very good. Will Gardener 91-93/100
