The Story

Imperial is one of the renowned references in the entire history of Spanish winemaking. It is a true classic in Rioja and was first bottled in the 1920’s. Its name was originally adopted after a special bottling for the English market in a bottle called ‘Pinta Imperial’ or ‘Imperial Pint’ (an Imperial pint, half a litre approximately).

Wine Information

1928 was a shining year in Rioja. The winter was mild, an excellent spring followed with perfect flowering. There was a hot and dry summer with lots of sunshine, and some much-needed rain arrived in August. Autumn was exceptionally cold and there was some frost during the harvest. The final crop was notably reduced, but the quality was excellent, especially with grapes from high altitudes.

Written Notes

This elegant 1928 Imperial came directly from Bodegas antiquated cellars, and was in first-rate condition. Decanted 2 hours before tasting. Good, dark and healthy red color. At first the bouquet was a bit unclean and unrefined, but after 30 minutes in the glass it turned out far better than I initially thought it ever would – a fresh, graceful bouquet of sweet, toasty, gentle oak mixed with ripe black cherries and olive flavors. On the palate it was a bit dry and fruitless (but not totally) wine with very low acidity, but simultaneously it has a very good balance and intense mouth-feel with extremely soft and gentle tannins. Very lovely and fragile wine with extensive and silky aftertaste. I cherished it.
