The Story

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE), launched the Viña Real brand in the 1920s becoming one of the pioneering wineries in making crianza wines in oak barrels in this area. A careful balance between tradition and modernity has defined the form and content of Viña Real.

Made with high quality grapes harvested by hand from our better plots in Rioja Alavesa. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures with a frequent dropping of the juice over the skins in order to maximise extraction. Malolactic Fermentation is carried out in French and American oak barrels, and then, the wine is manually racked to stabilise and get rid of deposits. After the cask ageing for 2 years, the wine is clarified with white of egg to achieve the silkiness and shiny final colour. Aging in bottle 36 months.

The Viña Real winery in Laguardia, designed by French architect Philippe Mazières, is composed of three buildings. The main one is constructed with red cedar in the form of a fermenting vat. The natural light, the caves dug to store the wine and the leading-edge technology - with the use of gravity, the installation of the first vertical hopper in Spain - define this monumental work.

Written Notes

Even in a warmer year, this is like a quintessence of the Rioja Alavesa, combining Tempranillo and 5% Graciano to brilliant effect. Still youthful and vibrant, it’s floral, peppery and fresh with crunchy black cherry fruit and subtle oak spice.

The classical 2012 Viña Real Gran Reserva is produced with 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, fermented in stainless steel with neutral dry yeasts and aged in new oak barrel for two years. It's very spicy and creamy, with developed aromas, open and expressive. The palate feels very polished, with a fine thread of acidity going through its core. There is good balance between power and elegance. It should develop nicely in bottle, even if it's approachable now. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2015.

Like most producers in Rioja (and elsewhere in Spain), CVNE lost some 70% of their crop in 2017, a year marked by frost and drought. The whites and rosés are not as vibrant as 2016 (a very good year overall), and the reds are better in 2017 than whites. As for 2016, it's a year of quantity and quality, with vibrant whites. 2015 is more homogeneous and dry and 2014 very challenging and very heterogeneous. Víctor Urrutia's classification would be: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014. But it's early to say much about 2017, which has just finished malolactic. They have invested in buying new vineyards in the last few years.
