The Story

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE), launched the Viña Real brand in the 1920s becoming one of the pioneering wineries in making crianza wines in oak barrels in this area. A careful balance between tradition and modernity has defined the form and content of Viña Real.

Made with high quality grapes harvested by hand from our better plots in Rioja Alavesa. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures with a frequent dropping of the juice over the skins in order to maximise extraction. Malolactic Fermentation is carried out in French and American oak barrels, and then, the wine is manually racked to stabilise and get rid of deposits. After the cask ageing for 2 years, the wine is clarified with white of egg to achieve the silkiness and shiny final colour. Aging in bottle 36 months.

The Viña Real winery in Laguardia, designed by French architect Philippe Mazières, is composed of three buildings. The main one is constructed with red cedar in the form of a fermenting vat. The natural light, the caves dug to store the wine and the leading-edge technology - with the use of gravity, the installation of the first vertical hopper in Spain - define this monumental work.

Written Notes

A very good vintage in general, for many the last of the great classical vintages of rioja, better than the initial assessment indicated. CVNE vinified 3.3 million litres that year.
Slightly volatile (think varnish) and a little spirity. In the mouth it is polished, but shows the alcohol a little. A little light in the mouth. I've had fresher bottles of the 1973. (LG)

1973 CVNE, Viña Real, Rioja Gran Reserva
Imported by the Rare Wine Co. A fine, clean nose reveals familiar deep aromas, and sweet red scents. With air it takes on floral aromas. In the mouth are cherry fruits framed by a fine structure. It offers good grip and presence with a rounded body. The cherry note continues in the finish and into the ethereal aftertaste. *** Now – 2022.

Good looking normaali size bottle. Colour is rusehtava. On the nose it is raikas and ripe. The taste is ryhdikäs, fragrant, with keskirunsaat tanniinit, and vähäinen hapokkuus, keskitäyteläinen, with moniulotteinen structure and kehittynyt. On the palate it is layered and has karhunvatukkaa, blackcurrant, cherry, cigar-box, spice and tobacco flavours. The finish is pitkä and notkea. This wine is well-rounded. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 5-10€ years and decant at least 2t before tasting. Good value for money. I do recommend.
