The Story

This was the first parcel purchased by Georges Mugneret in 1953 when he was a medical student. He had been determined to buy a parcel of Clos Vougeot ever since that of his grandfather had been sold, and had in his private cellar some 1929 Clos Vougeot - the year of his birth - coming from that old parcel. The soil is pebbly and gravelly, with very low clay content, allowing the vines to grow deep roots easily.

Vintage 2005

2005 VINTAGE in Burgundy / Hopes made way for certainty.

Written Notes

Youthful deep red. The darkest vintage on the nose to this point, offering brooding scents of black fruits, violet and menthol. At once sweet and penetrating, with its almost liqueur-like dark fruit flavors cut by mineral-driven vinosity. This very densely packed wine finishes with substantial chewy, tongue-dusting yet integrated tannins and alluring saline character. This strikes me as just short of a long plane of peak maturity. If you open a bottle soon, pair it with roasted game birds or chevreuil. (14% alcohol; 39 hl/h; 3.5 pH; harvested on September 18)
