The very precocious springtime was a sign for a September harvest but the whims of the summer period prevailed over calculation.

First, on June 28th, the hailstorm which damaged the vineyards in Pommard and Volnay tempered our enthusiasm as it hit our vines from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Chambolle-Musigny.
The wet and chilly weather of August considerably slowed down the maturation process.
In September, a surprise guest called Drosophila Su...

The Story

This was the first parcel purchased by Georges Mugneret in 1953 when he was a medical student. He had been determined to buy a parcel of Clos Vougeot ever since that of his grandfather had been sold, and had in his private cellar some 1929 Clos Vougeot - the year of his birth - coming from that old parcel. Marvelous!

The soil is pebbly and gravelly, with very low clay content, allowing the vines to grow deep roots easily.

Wine Information

The garnet colour is clear.
The nose is complex and offers notes of flowers and fruits combined with woody scents.
The mouth is ample, rich and silky. It shows an outstanding balance as well as a remarkable aftertaste.

This wine is a compromise between the power and finesse of Ruchottes-Chambertin and the elegance of Echezeaux, but it has the greatest ageing potential among these three Grands Crus.

The winter temperatures were above average with only ...

Written Notes

Healthy medium red; not as dark as the '15. Spicy red fruits, menthol and musky soil tones on the expressive nose, along with the salty aspect of this vintage. Fine-grained, floral and mineral-driven, conveying terrific cut to its strawberry, raspberry and blood orange fruit flavors. But owing to its strong saline minerality, this dense but juicy wine is about much more than primary fruit and is already long on personality. More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. (12.9% alcohol; 3.7 pH, 42 hl/h; harvested on September 21)
