The Story

Dominus is created by French winemaker Christian Moueix, who crafted the wines of Chateau Petrus (a bottle of which recently sold at auction as one of the most expensive wines ever sold). The Dominus estate owns the historic Napanook Vineyard that was the base of so many of the historic Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons of the 1950s and 1960s. It is considered one of the finest reds of Napa Valley.

Christian Moueix’s approach to creating wines of stature and longevity in Napa’s fertile and warm climate wasn’t always as popular as it is today. It started with his search for the perfect piece of land where he could realize his dream of creating a Napa Valley Cabernet to rival the First Growths of Bordeaux. This didn’t happen overnight, in fact the entire vineyard that feeds Dominus was reorganized and replanted over the last three decades to take better advantage of the varieties, expositions and spacing that would best express this esteemed terroir. The introduction of Tod Mostero as vineyard manager and winemaker was another big step in the right direction.

Wine Information

DOMINUS 1999

The last vintage of the century will be remembered for its exceptional quality. This vintage was characterized by its extremely long growing season- a season where patience eventually paid dividends in the form of wine with outstanding character and complexity.

The 1999 vintage is beautifully harmonious with an inviting color and a very full body. This wine starts with a delicate entry of black cherry aromas, evolving toward impressively structured tannins. The long, fragrant finish reveals spicy notes and a hint of cedar.

The 1999 blend includes 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.

This wine is built to age. We recommend decanting this wine prior to serving, to allow it to develop its full potential. This is especially important when serving young wines.

Vintage Summary:

The 1999 growing season was noteworthy with a very dry winter, rather cold, followed by a cool spring and mild summer. The berries were quite small, resulting in distinctively concentrated wine that will need long cellaring to reveal its full potential. Due to the small berry size, the yield was very low- the lowest of the decade. Bottling was done one month earlier than usual to preserve the exceptional fruit character.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle, in an perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is ruby red, and looking healthy and deep. On the nose it is intense, refined, fresh and generous. The taste is round, focused, elegant, medium-bodied, with balanced, well-structured structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has creamy, dried-fruit, perfumed, herbs, blackberry, tobacco, plum and cigar-box flavours. The finish is medium long, gentle and flavorful. This wine is sophisticated,well-rounded and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 2h before tasting. Good value for money.
