Lisa Perrotti-Brown's The Wine Independent scored this a perfect 100 points saying "Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Dominus was harvested from September 29 to October 10. It was aged in 40% new oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose slowly unfurls to unveil beguiling floral notes of candied violets and rose oil over a core of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, giving way...

The Story

Dominus is created by French winemaker Christian Moueix, who crafted the wines of Chateau Petrus (a bottle of which recently sold at auction as one of the most expensive wines ever sold). The Dominus estate owns the historic Napanook Vineyard that was the base of so many of the historic Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons of the 1950s and 1960s. It is considered one of the finest reds of Napa Valley.

Written Notes

The 2021 Dominus opens with an enchanting aromatic profile: black cherry, wild blueberry, and ripe plum, lifted by delicate floral tones of violet, rose petal, and lavender. With time in the glass, deeper layers unfold — graphite, crushed stone, sweet tobacco, and a whisper of exotic spice — giving the bouquet both finesse and quiet complexity.

On the palate, the wine is silky, luminous, and beautifully detailed, offering a seamless interplay of richness and tension. Flavors of cassis, redcurrant, mulberry, and blackberry coulis glide effortlessly across the mid-palate, supported by subtle undertones of licorice, cocoa nib, black tea, and warm cedar.

The tannins are ultra-fine and perfectly integrated, lending both structure and grace without ever imposing heaviness.

A line of vibrant, crystalline acidity brings lift and precision, while a cool, mineral backbone — slate, crushed rock, and a faint salinity — gives definition and length. As the wine evolves, hints of sage, sandalwood, dark chocolate, and forest floor emerge, adding savory nuance and aromatic depth.

The finish is long, refined, and resonant, echoing with dark fruit, floral spice, and shimmering minerality.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Ripe dark berries, marmalade, candied orange zest, Morello cherries and mild spices. On the palate well-balanced with ripe tannins, fine acidity, juicy fruit and excellent length.
