The Story

Of all the villages of the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the most fruitful in terms of the number of its Grands Crus. The Clos de Tart, which remains a solely-held entity, was founded by the Cistercians of Tart in 1141. Since that date, it has been owned by only three families. The Clos Saint-Denis came on the scene in the 11th century, thanks to the fortress of Vergy. 1964 Clos-de-Tart Mommessin (Côte de Nuits)

Clos de Tart is one of the most ancient vineyards of Burgundy. It has had only three owners since the middle Ages. The 7.22 hectare walled vineyard belonged to the nuns of Tart from 1141 until the French Revolution. It then passed to the famous Marey-Monge family and from 1932 it has been a monopole of Mommessin of Macou.

Written Notes

The 1966 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has a healthy deep russet hue. The bouquet is delightful: old-school Burgundy with dark berry fruit, mulberry, fern, damp woodland and just a touch of mint, gently unfolding with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, offering fine tannin and red fruit tinctured by a splash of soy. I admire the definition, breeding and nobility of this Clos de Tart, which shows just a little dryness on the finish but is otherwise holding up well. Very fine. Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London.
