The Story

Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. Established in 1849, Champagne Pol Roger remains family-owned and proudly independent to this day. Pol Roger, the 1831 born founder of the house, had lived in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ his whole childhood. The whole family supported the enterprise of their son. From early on Pol Roger focused in exports, and the English m...

Vintage 1928

Champagne Vintage by Richard Juhlin / The vintage of the century! Krug from this year is considered by many experts to be the most perfect champagne ever made. More than eighty years old, champagne is always a gamble, and I regret to inform you that I am no longer equally impressed with this powerful vintage as I was earlier. Certainly, there are great bottles— and the acidity is always impressive—but most are pitted by maderisation, unlike th...

Written Notes

This wonderful vintage of Pol Roger was known as an obsession for Sir Winston Churchill. A case of this his favourite vintage champagne was delivered him by Odette Pol-Roger on his every birthday after the Second World War until 1953 when the vintage was finally run out from the Pol Roger stocks.
The vintage itself started well with an ideal budding season. The spring frosts together with the violent hailstorms caused some damage on vineyards. The flowering was extended with some millerandage. Preferable weather conditions during the summer and autumn yielded superb quality crop. This vintage has to be considered being one of the vintages of the century in Champagne.
Superb looking bottle. Good level. Bright golden colour with lazy small bubbles. Pronounced, elegant nose possesses brioche aromas and great deal of dried fruits peaches and apricots with delicate hints of creaminess and coffee. Dry and crisp palate with fainted mousse. Very lean and persistent wine with complex, delicate flavours of dried fruits and coffee. Lingering long mineral finish in superb balance. Tasting this wine makes nobody wonder why Sir Winston had fell in love with this wine. Unfortunately, he never had a chance to experience this wine in this lovely mature condition.

So how would one start a weekend of this magnitude, with a magnum of 1928 Pol Roger, of course. This original magnum (no recent disgorgement) had lightly sauteed butter and perfectly burnt white sugar in its nose. It was quite sweet, ‘normal for the period’ per SuperSomm, who has won Sommelier of the Year somewhere somehow official. Suffice it to say, he has one of great palates I have encountered, even though he is Swedish . Back to the wine, wheat, light grass and yellow fever all graced the palate, which also had just the right amount of petillance. Its sweetness was noticeable to the last sip (95M).
