The Story

Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. Established in 1849, Champagne Pol Roger remains family-owned and proudly independent to this day. Pol Roger, the 1831 born founder of the house, had lived in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ his whole childhood. The whole family supported the enterprise of their son. From early on Pol Roger focused in exports, and the English market was the most important one from the beginning. The commercial success of the company had its roots in the business model where they produced other champagne brands in the Pol Roger facilities. Pol Roger is one of the few remaining family owned Grande Marque champagne businesses.

 

This 100% Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from vineyards Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. 

Vinification: The must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediately after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept separate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.

Vintage 2012

2012 was deemed one of the best vintages the Champagne region has ever experienced. “The quality and the intensity are definitely there to make an outstanding vintage,” Dom Perignon chef de cave Richard Geoffroy told Decanter. The base wines show a lovely richness as well as the acidity needed to make outstanding and long-lived Champagnes. Yields are very low, in some places half of the allowed production.

Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2012 – After all of the raving about the quality of Pinot Noir from the 2012 vintage, we now have this wine, made from 100% Chardonnay. Fear not, it is a brilliant wine (it always is). 7 grams dosage, the grapes are sourced from some of the finest Grand crus found in the Cote des Blancs – Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger (it doesn’t get much better). Again, full malo and hand riddling. Entrancing green/gold colour. The aromas move through hazelnut, fresh lemons, peaches, white jasmine. A combination of ripeness and richness but always balanced, always refined. This wine combines the elegance of the House with the exuberance of the vintage. Great length, it just persists. Clean, refreshing and complex. A very gentle smoked note creeps in near the finish. Vibrant acidity, intensely focused. Again, a wine with such an exciting future ahead of it. Don’t be swayed by 2012 having the reputation as a Pinot year. It might well be, but that does not mean that there are not some wonderful Chardonnay-based wines. Stunning stuff. 97.

The taste is vivid, focused, elegant, refined, harmonious, silky, and dry, medium-bodied, with balanced, good texture, concentrated structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has toasty, creamy, white fruits and citrus flavours. The finish is long, lingering, pure and vibrant. This wine is impressive.
