Vintage 2016

The 2016 harvest in the Douro brought perfectly-timed rain that turned a good year into a great one. Fortunately, despite a challenging growing season and a much adjusted and delayed picking schedule, those producers with excellent vineyard knowledge and confident decision-making, were rewarded with spectacular Vintage Ports.

Written Notes

Vallado Adelaide Vintage Port 2016 – From a trio of winemakers who are part of the Douro Boys, but these are no newcomers, with all having connections to the Ferreira family dating back to the earliest days of the port industry. The Quinta do Vallado was established back in 1716 and was owned by the famous Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira (I met one of her descendants on one trip, and he enquired about an amazing earlier tasting where we had gone back as far as the 1847 Ferreira Vintage Port. We chatted about the wine and he finished by telling me that he had been curious as he was down to his last three bottles – what treasures that must be hidden away in Douro cellars boggles the mind). The grapes are no longer sold to Ferreira but used for Vallado, and what an inspired decision that is. Winemaking sees the use of 70% stems.

The result is opaque, near black, with aromas of spices, licorice, aniseed, dry herbs and dark cooking chocolate. It is concentrated and powerful with mouthcoating tannins. There is sweetness, but the balance of the wine makes it near invisible. Extremely long, this is a serious and extremely good VP. 97.
