The Story

Black Label, our iconic flagship, and the first ultra-premium wine made by Wolf Blass in 1973. Wolf’s aim was to create the finest red blend from the vintage and, 37 vintages later, the sentiment is as true today as it was then. Written Notes

80% cab from Langhorne Creek and 20% merlot from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. First introduction of merlot and what an awful year to do it. The Biblical year – floods, fires, boils, plagues, hurricanes – you name it. In the entire line-up of 35 vintages of Black Label, perhaps no wine was more surprising. Certainly, none overcame its vintage conditions and reputation in such amazing fashion. This should have been crap. Rich, chocolate-y, plush, soft, alluring and ripe. Very appealing. Not crap. Undoubtedly, we hit an extremely good bottle, confirmed by Chris Hatcher. Quite seamless, lots of life. Chocolate finish. Seriously impressive. Far better than it had any right to be.
