The Story

Platinum Label Shiraz was first created from the 1998 vintage to honour Australia's most iconic grape variety, shiraz, and the region we call our home, the Barossa. This marriage of region and variety is one of long-standing excellence, so we set out to create the ultimate wine to express both region and variety, capturing the very essence of Barossa Shiraz.

The very best of Barossa Shiraz is expressed within a cloak of lifted fruit and the velvety texture that is the hallmark of Wolf Blass.

Vineyard: The distinguished Medlands Vineyard lies within an exceptional pocket of ground at Dorrien on the central north Barossa Valley floor, a site long renowned for growing outstanding Shiraz. Gently sloping towards the North Para River, the microclimate benefits from cooling breezes flowing down-river from the foothills and enjoys optimum sunlight, low rainfall and low humidity.

Soil: The vineyard is comprised of ancient soils ranging from loamy sands over light clays to sandy loams over medium clays, laid down 5 million years ago when an uplift of the Eastern ranges and a sinking of the valley floor caused the central valley to fill with sediments. This unique terroir results in Shiraz of purity, elegance, tight structure and flawless balance.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Wolf Blass Platinum ‘Medlands Vineyard Barossa Shiraz 2012

22 months in 75% new and 25% one-year-old French barriques. A very dark, basically opaque purple. Opens with plush chocolate notes. Blueberries here with spices, florals and more. Dry herbs and violets. Coffee beans and blackfruits. There is oak to be found here but it is well integrated. Despite approaching its tenth birthday, this is still so young, it seems wrong to be drinking it just yet. Wrong, but wickedly enjoyable. A powerful structure, built for the long haul. There are fine tannins but lots of them. Indeed, quite mouth-puckering by the finish. Some plum notes emerged on the finish. There is good length here but not quite as much as one finds with the very best. KG 94p.
