Marc Brevot introduces the multi-vintage MCIII

Upon my confession that I wasn’t as familiar with the technicalities of winemaking as I would have preferred, Marc Brevot the winemaker laughed, “I guess I can help you there!” But behind his friendly and amicable disposition, Brevot has many years of experience as part of the team over at Moët & Chandon, and was recently in Singapore to unveil the champagne company’s latest prestige cuvée, the...

The Story

Born from a desire to capture the diverse qualities of three distinct wine-ageing environments in a single harmoniously complex champagne, MCIII is a state-of-the-art creation. Led by Cellar Master Benoît Gouez, Moët & Chandon winemakers created an assemblage never before seen in the maison’s history. Fifteen years of testing and tasting resulted in a champagne that combines the compelling fruitiness of the best 2003 chardonnay and pinot noir ...

Lots of honey, walnut and patisserie aromas straight away. So buttery and so tropical, this has a real unexpected freshness. Despited the aged components it sits safely on the reductive side. Heaps of acidity but so many layers of fruit and dried fruits that linger forever. You can taste younger elements from 2002, this is def...

Bright light golden colour with small mature bubbles. Intense and complex nose displaying a fine toastiness, roasted nuts, almond with ripe fruit like pear, peach, candied citrus and brioche/butter, fine chocolate and tobacco. Full bodied and ample palate, layered and nuanced with fine maturity, a soft creaminess and plenty of ripe fruit with candied citrus, hazelnut and pastry notes. Harmonious, mature and complex with very good grip, depth and extraordinary length. Nothing i know (yet but must be one of the greatest NV Champagnes ever...).

The Brut MCIII (001.14), Moët’s new ultra high-end multi-vintage blend, is being released this year in magnum. MCIII is a blend based on 2003, with 40% 2002, 2000 and 1998 Grand Vintage wines aged specifically for this Champagne, plus about 20% 1999, 1998 and 1993 Grand Vintage wines taken from bottles that were opened and then added to the final blend. Given the natural richness of 2003 and the significant presence of older vintages, MCIII is a resonant, expansive Champagne built on texture and breadth. Orange peel, spice, apricot jam, baked pastry, honey, hazelnut and chamomile fill out the wine’s frame effortlessly, with gently oxidative, burnished overtones that add complexity. The magnum format and slightly lower dosage vis-à-vis the standard bottles seem especially well suited to this wine. Today, the MCIII from magnum is terrific.

Yellow, with a golden glow.Coffee, praline and Viennese pastry give way to citrus peel and kumquat, followed by mineral-tinged aromas redolent of the sea.The silky, opulent palate expresses notes of candied citrus fruits, plums and nectarines, dried figs and dates, and vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. A precise finish has a lightly bitter saltiness.

This is the first release of Moet's latest all-singing, all-dancing construction. The III in the name refers to three strata and three 'universes' because it is a blend of wines made in steel, in oak and in glass. Using the language so typical of Moet's theatrical approach to marketing, there are three strata: 37-40% is the first stratum, which is 50/50 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir from the 2003 vintage fermented and aged in steel. Then there's 37-40% of the second stratum, ie Grand Vintage blends from the 1998, 2000 and 2002 vintages that have been partially aged in large oak casks, and then preserved in stainless steel vats. Finally there's 20-25% of the third stratum, which are premise en ecercle champagnes from the Grand Vintage Collection (from 1993, 1998 and 1999) which have been aged in bottle, disgorged and matured in the house?s cellars in Epernay. The idea is to create layers of complexity. All in all, 10 years on lees, 7 components, 7 vintages and 7 g/l dosage. The UK allocation is 100 bottles! Subtle, creamy and lightly spiced. Lightly honeyed and smoky. Some green apple, but not as tart as that suggests. There is a definite sour aspect to the freshness. It does have real complexity. Not a one-way champagne. Much more of a wine than a champagne. Creamy, fresh, a little like white burgundy. Does have real depth and persistence. And a freshness that is not just acidity. Though there is freshness in acidity. The wine seemed to have very little mousse and I don?t know if that was the glass or the wine.

Sisäpiiritietoa

The three distinct ageing environments involved in each layer of MCIII – metal, wood and glass – are vital to the champagne’s success. Drawing from Moët & Chandon’s extensive reserves, stored in the 30 miles of caves beneath the maison, winemakers blended still wines aged in stainless steel vats, bringing richness, with oak-aged Grand Vintage wines, providing elegance, and Grand Vintage champagnes ageing in glass bottles, allowing for an incredible freshness.
