The Story

DOM PÉRIGNON OENOTHÈQUE  / As the custodian of Dom Pérignon’s history and style, Geoffroy watches over a few samples of each vintage in his OEnothèque, the Chef de Cave’s wine cellar. In the OEnothèque, the wine continues to mature for years and even decades, and is reborn with each metamorphosis of time, for Dom Pérignon is unanimously recognized for its impressive aging potential. As Geoffroy puts it, “Dom Pérignon OEnothèque is the ultimate expression of a wine whose style defies time.”

Geoffroy’s commitment to the OEnothèque program, which began with the 1990 Vintage, involves ongoing personal research on each vintage. The effect of time on the bottled wine retains its share of mystery and surprise even for him.

Dom Pérignon keeps pushing one step further, sometimes rewriting the rules, to pave the path for renewed experiences. So does Œnothèque, glorifying the exclusive process of actively aging a wine on its lees to offer a magnified style through re-releases. Œnothèque prolongs the character of the original Vintage wine, coming ever closer to the ideal of Dom Pérignon. The patience of wine lovers is now rewarded with a deeper, more intimate discovery and perception of Dom Pérignon. The current Vintage is put in proper perspective by giving a glimpse of the aging potential. It would now be virtually impossible for me to imagine Dom Pérignon without its Œnothèque expression.

Vintage 1976

This sunny and hot drought year with record heat levels across Europe led to a very early harvest, which began on September 1st. Large yields (averaging 10,359 kg/ha) of super ripe fruit produced rich and powerful champagnes, although relatively low in acidity (averaging 7.2 g/l). The acidity levels made some winemakers doubt the wines' longevity but this has since been proven wrong by a multitude of majestic 1976 Champagnes defying time. The style is unashamedly ripe, big and even fatty with plush fruitiness. By no means ‘classic' in style but nevertheless great and a forefather to the warm vintages we are experiencing now. Bollinger R.D. 1976 from magnum for example, is something to behold. Other magnificent cuvées include Philipponnat Clos des Goisses, Dom Pérignon Brut and P3, Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque, Piper-Heidsieck Rare and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne.

Written Notes

A wine that has impressed me very little in the past, with its vintage-typical, slightly burned, warm character. That’s why it was it was such a great surprise that I liked the ’76 so much. This bottle had a sensual floweriness that distinguishes the foremost ’76s, as well as a stately, long, sweet finish. Grandiose! Winner of the comprehensive DP tasting in Copenhagen 2006.’

All of the qualities found in the original release are amped up in the 1976 Dom Pérignon Œnothèque (Disgorged 2003). Unctuous and deep the 1976 Œno is a real powerhouse, but all of that intensity is nicely countered by the wine’s brightness and energy. This is another stellar release in the Œnothèque (P2) series.

The bouquet is powerful with ample warmth. Sweet honeysuckle notes rapidly lead to flavours of ripe mirabelle plums and raisins as well as complex roasted aromas. A lush opulence on the palate is combined with a strong smooth balance blending fullness and depth. The extraordinary persistence seems to be everlasting, and is lifted with just a slight hint of bitterness (blood orange).

The weather was extraordinarily dry, with climatic conditions oscillating from one extreme to the other during the year. Flowering was early and the extremely hot summer reduced to 84 days the traditional 100-day period between flowering and harvesting. The harvest started on September 1. The exceptional maturity of the grapes produced wines of outstanding quality.
