The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the flow of the river Duero and the passage of time have been vital in forming these soils.

70 of these hectares are employed to produce Unico. A unique, magical estate which, along with extraordinary management of the vineyard, ...

Wine Information

Unico – Bodegas Vega Sicilia

Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico is still “a prophet in its own land”, Spain, and only a small part of the production leaves the country to be sold abroad. The production of Unico varies from 30.000 to 100.000 bottles depending on the year. The commercial success of Unico is nevertheless decided beforehand regardless of the amount produced, since each vintage is already sold out before the bottling. Yet 700 people are...

Written Notes

The 1960 Unico that followed was blacker as in berries, shut down in the nose but solid in the mouth. It was a bit slatier and thicker than the ’59, but it had nice body, like asphalt without the sun. Its big finish was admired by all of the above (93).

Medium-intense, beautiful tawny colour. The intense nose delivers leathery, dark chocolate, nutty and earthy tones with herbaceous nuances. Medium-bodied and elegant palate. Vivid acidity and gentle tannins form a soft, silky structure. Lingering long and nutty finish. JL 92p

More Bordeaux grapes (30%) than most. 70% Tempranillo and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
More orange at the rim that the other wines from the 1960s. Less concentrated and structured! Broad and sweet but without the nerve and framework of the 1964, say. A little more tamed, softer and less distinctive. But very sweet and mild and friendly. I’d love to see this next to a 1961 bordeaux. Flattering but very lively.

  • 95p

A weaker vintage with dried tobacco and tea leaf dominating the flavours. Holding up well but starting to fade.

  • 89p
Ruby, brick rim. Cinnamon, spices, some prunes, spicy cake, Christmas spices nose. Fresh acidity, tannins letting go, fresh if not very fruity, but not to thin either, lingers on, refreshing and nuanced. 89
