The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the flow of the river Duero and the passage of time have been vital in forming these soils.

Vintage 1989 / TINTO FINO: 80%, CABERNET SAUVIGNON: 20%
Once the process of fermentation has been completed, the wine remained in large-capacity wooden vats for 2 years. It then matured for 16 months in new casks, 3 years ins emi-new casks, 3 in used casks and finally, a futher 3 years in large-capacity wooden vats. The remaining time was spent in the bottle until being released.

Written Notes

Moderately-intense, ruby-red colour. Pronounced, spirity nose with complex aromas of black fruits, leather and smoke. A full-bodied palate with an intense mouthfeel. Lovely fruitiness of cherry, fig and plum flavours, vivid acidity and supple tannins. Satin texture with a long, harmonious, yet reserved aftertaste. JL 89p

End of a phase of potential. This was served before the 1990 because it is still to unfold. Not quite ready to drink, they think. (Like 1981, a very good vintage.) Released in 2003.
Still dark with evolution at the rim. Heady nose with balsamic and putty notes though not especially rich. Lovely rich nose. Velvety. Smells as though it’s ready to drink! On the palate it’s still slightly dry and austere but is obviously a very serious wine. Thick and slightly dusty on the finish – a very dry vintage? Acidity still dominates.

Ruby, brick rim. Blueberries, anise, spices, anise, some spices, eucalyptus, nuanced nose. Iron touch. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, anise, some spices, anise, dried fruits, tobacco finish. Long. 96

Dark garnet red colour. Aroma initially reminiscent of dark berry jam and hints of eucalyptus, slightly balmy spices in the background. On the palate well structured with well defined tannins, firm character, fine acidity, good length.
