Parker: The 1995 Unico is a worthy successor to the profound 1994 (awarded a score of 98+ in Issue #159). Opaque purple in color, it has aromatic complexity which nearly defies words. There are notes of earth, licorice, hard wood charcoal, and black currants. Full-bodied, and powerful, the wine has beautiful balance with a multi-dimensional character and the structure to last for 25-40 years. The 1960 and the 1965, drunk within the last severa...

The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. Written Notes

This was a great vintage: 'no winemaker was necessary' says Xavier the winemaker. This is all from north-facing vineyawrds with very low yields.
This is the flagship wine of Vega Sicilia generally released 10 years after the harvest but is released only in good years. The aim is to maximise the quality of Valbuena. Almost rustic, rude overlay on glossy fruit. Clean and fresh. Very very youthful. Dense but still very unformed. Muscular, this wine needs lots of time. The finish is till quite dry and strict.

Ruby. Scented, red berries, touch of mint, anise and vanilla nose. Coffee notes. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, leaner, mint and spices, quite elegant. Bit thin. 89

  • 89p

Brick red colour. Aromatic nose with discreet aroma of blackcurrants and dried fruits, mild spices and hints of smoky minerality. On the palate well balanced with mature character and convincing length.
