The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the flow of the river Duero and the passage of time have been vital in forming these soils.

70 of these hectares are employed to produce Unico. A unique, magical estate which, along with extraordinary management of the vineyard, ...

Written Notes

The year 1987 was a challenge in the Ribera del Duero. Wet winter and occasional rain during the entire growing season, including harvest time, made this vintage a risky business. Vega Sicilia managed remarkably well by being able to produce 80 000 bottles of Unico, taking into account that the range of Unicos produced can vary from 0 to 100 000 bottles based on the year. This vintage of Unico drinks fairly young and they have, despite the challenging conditions, been able to produce a charming and harmonious wine. A fairly youthful deep, dark red colour. The nose is pronounced with meat, smoke and tobacco aromatics. The palate reveals farmyard tones and fresh ripe raspberries. The refreshing acidity combines well with the wines balanced alcohol. The exceptionally long, persistent finish lifts this wine into the super-premium category. Starting to drink well now but it will benefit from 10 years of additional bottle maturation.

Moderately-intense, ruby colour. Volatile nose that has ripe dark fruit, milk chocolate and earthy tones. The medium-bodied palate has high acidity, gentle tannins and a moderately high volatility. The restrained fruitiness reveals some red fruit flavours. Moderate finish. JL 87p

Atypical vintage for Vega Sicilia. Relatively austere, especially when launched, when it wasn’t well understood. Nicely balanced.
Now, pruney, almost porty on the nose! Then austere on the palate. Should be great with food but not a charmer. Very pure and expressive. Very clean finish.

Fairly youthful deep dark red colour. The nose is pronounced with meat, smoke and tobacco aromatics. The palate reveils farmyardy tones and fresh ripe raspberries. The refreshing acidity combines well with the wine’s balanced alcohol. Exceptionally long persistent finish lifts this wine into the superprmium category. Starting to drink well know but will benefit from 5 to 10 years of additional bottle maturation.
