The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

Château Margaux 1950 is a stunning wine, which possesses an almost unique grace. Its bouquet has a finesse reminiscent of the 1953 without quite having the same complexity. The impression on the palate is one of delicacy, smoothness, extraordinary harmony. 1950 does not have the length or the muscle of a great vintage, but it is a dream of a Margaux, an emotional rather than a sensational wine. We are completely taken aback by its freshness, w...

Vintage 1950

Looking more closely at the decade, attention should also be drawn to the 1950 Bordeaux vintage, which offered more quantity than quality - with a few exceptions. Due to the relatively rainy summer, expectations for the year were not very high, but the change in weather at the end of the year made it a good year, and even excellent in some areas. Written Notes

Shows a rich garnet color with a hint of amber at the rim, indicating its maturity.

The bouquet is complex and aromatic, offering scents of ripe blackberries and plums, complemented by luxurious notes of truffle, leather, and fine tobacco. Floral undertones of violets add a layer of elegance.

Full-bodied and velvety, the wine delivers a rich tapestry of dark fruit flavors melded with secondary notes of dark chocolate, cedar, and a hint of spice. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, and the acidity is still vibrant, bringing balance to the lush palate.

The finish is long and satisfying, with persistent notes of fruit and spice, underscored by a refined earthy minerality.

The 1950 Chateau Margaux is a superb example of a good Bordeaux vintage, showcasing the depth, elegance, and complexity that the estate is renowned for. It is beautifully matured, offering a luxurious drinking experience that is both rich and harmonious.

We are completely taken aback by its freshness, which only a miracle could have saved in this wine so tender, that we thought was fragile. Wines like this are the proof that it is not necessarily muscle which gives strength. It should not improve any further in the future, and we think it would be better to drink it now, so as not to miss this magical opportunity.
