The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. Wine Information

A very mediocre wine, completely forgotten. Along with 1930, 1932 and 1933, 1931 was one of a run of cold, rainy years, in which the outbreak of vine disease was commonplace and the ripeness of the grapes never attained.

Written Notes

The wine displays a mature garnet color with notable browning at the edges, indicative of its advanced age.

The nose is still intriguing, with hints of dried red fruits, such as cherries and cranberries, complemented by deeper notes of leather, tobacco, and a touch of damp earth. There is a faint whisper of dried flowers in the background, adding a thin layer of complexity.

Light-bodied with a someway delicate structure, the palate reveals a blend of muted fruit flavors and pronounced secondary characteristics. The notes of old leather, cedar, and a hint of spice dominate, with the fruit largely receded, showing the challenges of the vintage.

The finish is moderate, continuing with the themes of leather and earth, and ends on a slightly herbal note.

The 1931 Chateau Margaux reflects the struggles of a very challenging vintage, offering a glimpse into the resilience and craft of winemaking under difficult conditions. This wine, while not exhibiting the vibrancy or complexity of better years, still holds a certain historical intrigue and offers a mature, nuanced drinking experience, best appreciated for its age and rarity.
