The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Vintage 2001

Bordeaux / The year 2001 is known as the year of the winegrowers. The whole of Bordeaux suffered from a lot of rain and the resulting noble rot. Sauternes has been producing its best wines for decades, and there is good reason to talk about the Sauternes revolution. The best wine of the year is clearly Yquem. Parker's hundred-point Yquem sold for 300 euros en primeur, and today the price is 600 euros per bottle.

Written Notes

The next wine had a forward nose and gave me a Mouton impression of cedar, nut and vanilla earth. The wine was mouth-filling and long, very dry with exquisite cedar, mineral, smoke and earth flavors.

Tasted in November 2021. I honestly admit that I don't remember to have tasted I've tasted this wine before. For sure, it was a memorable experience to taste such a beautiful wine! A perfectly scented nose of ripe blackcurrants and black cherries with black truffle, palate covered by lush berries and grained tannin, seamless structure, liquid cashmere, stunning midpalate, complexity, and finish. I'm delighted to have a couple of bottles of this beauty resting in my cellar! 99-100p.

2001 Château Margaux
Ruby, garnet rim. Scented, blueberries and cassis, fruit driven, floral, nuanced, detailed, beautiful nose, still building after five hours in decanter. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, cassis, blueberries, detailed, transparent, lovely balance, has depth even if it might seem straightforward, long finish. Utterly charming! 95
