The Story

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

1952 was the year Michel Bettane was born, and he joked how the wine was 'a bit younger than me today.' At first, the nose was quite bizarre and total chalk city; it was almost as if we were smelling more glass than wine. The nose was extremely spiny in a floor cleaner way, but that is 1952, someone said, all finish. Nut and carob emerged on the nose and on the palate, and the palate was certainly all about '52 . a hard, whips and chains nature with robust tannins and finish. I found the wine quite tasty with lots of backside flavors of rust, brick, earth, leather, dust and cedar. It held quite well and had excellent stuffing. Bipin insisted on the 1952 being included after having an incredible magnum and said that it was one of the wines of the vintage. Someone remarked how '52s were better palate wines than nose ones, and Leoville Barton and Calon Segur also came up as sleepers, along with Mouton. Tasted during Christmas dinner in Copenhagen in December 2007. Rare bottle of not that heralded vintage, but this wine was one of the best vintages of Montrose I've ever tasted! Tasted in December 2007. Here I became speechless. From the glass came a phenomenal aroma of truffles, tobacco, you name it. It was stunningly composed with exemplary balance and stunning richness, incredibly sophisticated and rarely seen complexity. Immensely rich aftertaste completed this perfect wine. Everything I love about Bordeaux was here! Montrose was particularly strong in 1950s with magnificent 1953, 1955 and 1959, but this 55 years old beauty (in 2007) was a fantastic thrill never to forget.
